The Classic Inca Trail is a famous hiking route that stretches over 42 kilometers (26 miles) from Cusco to Machu Picchu. It was once used by the Incas to travel between their settlements, and today, it is a popular tourist destination known for its stunning landscapes and ancient ruins.
We will start the Inca Trail at Kilometer 82, which is approximately 82 kilometers (51 miles) from Cusco. The trail will take us through breathtaking landscapes of the Andes Mountains, including high passes, lush valleys, and Inca ruins. We will also pass through several ecological zones, from high-altitude plains to subtropical forests.
The Inca Trail is a challenging hike that requires a good level of fitness and acclimatization to the altitude. It takes around 4 days to complete, and we will camp at designated campsites along the way. The highlight of the trail is reaching Machu Picchu through the Inti Punku, or Sun Gate, which offers a breathtaking view of the citadel. The first day of the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days starts early in the morning at 06:00 am from Cusco. We will take a scenic drive through the Sacred Valley towards Piscacucho, which is also known as Kilometer 82. Upon arrival, we will go through the Inca Trail checkpoint, and then cross the bridge over the Urubamba River to begin our trek.
The trek to Wayllabamba, our first campsite, will cover a distance of 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) and take about 6-7 hours. Along the way, we will have stunning views of the Vilcanota Ridge and pass through the lush vegetation of the Andean cloud forest. We will also visit the Incan archaeological site of Llactapata and learn about its history and significance.
As we continue along the trail, we will have the opportunity to observe native flora and fauna, such as orchids, bromeliads, and hummingbirds. We will also pass through several small communities where we can interact with the locals and learn about their culture and way of life.
Finally, we will arrive at Wayllabamba, our campsite for the night. Here, we will have a hearty dinner and rest up for the next day’s journey to the renowned Dead Woman’s Pass.
On the second day of the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days, we will start our trek after breakfast at Wayllabamba, and climb up to the highest point of the trail, Warmi Wañusqa (Dead Woman’s Pass) at 4,215 meters (13,829 feet) above sea level. Along the way, we will enjoy breathtaking views of the Andean mountains and valleys.
After reaching the top, we will descend to Pacaymayo, a campsite located at 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) above sea level, where we will have lunch and spend the night. The total distance covered on this day is approximately 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) and the trek can take up to 7 hours. The route will take us through the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, passing through diverse landscapes and fascinating Inca ruins.
On the third day of the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days, we will start early in the morning from Pacaymayo and hike up to the second pass called Runkurakay at an altitude of 13,776 feet (4,200 meters). From there, we will descend to Yanacocha, where we will have breakfast. After breakfast, we will continue our hike through the cloud forest to the archaeological site of Phuyupatamarka, which means “Town above the Clouds”.
Along the way, we will see Inca ruins, tunnels, and stunning views of the surrounding valleys. After exploring Phuyupatamarka, we will continue on to Wiñay Wayna, where we will set up camp for the night. Wiñay Wayna means “Forever Young” and is another impressive Inca archaeological site located at an altitude of 8,858 feet (2,700 meters). Here, we will have lunch and spend the afternoon exploring the site and its surrounding terraces. We will also have a farewell dinner with our porters and guides before settling down for the night.
On the fourth and final day of the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days, the group will wake up early in the morning and enjoy breakfast. Then, they will hike to the Sun Gate, also known as Inti Punku, where they will have their first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu. The distance covered on this day will be around 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), and it will take about 2 hours to reach the Sun Gate.
Once the group arrives at Machu Picchu, the guide will lead them on a tour of the ancient Incan citadel, which will last around 2-3 hours. They will visit the most important sites of Machu Picchu, such as the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Palace, the Temple of the Three Windows, and the Intihuatana stone.
After the tour, the group will have free time to explore Machu Picchu on their own, take pictures, and soak in the magical atmosphere of this sacred site. They can also hike to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain if they have a permit and want to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the citadel.
Later in the afternoon, the group will take a bus down to Aguas Calientes, where they will enjoy lunch and have some free time to explore the town. Then, they will take a train back to Ollantaytambo, where they will be picked up and driven back to Cusco, ending the tour around 9:00 pm.
Yes, camping is required for the overnight portion of the tour. Tents and camping equipment are typically provided by the tour operator.
